Pertamina and INPEX Strengthen Strategic Partnership in Developing the LNG Abadi Masela Project

Tokyo - PT Pertamina (Persero) and INPEX Corporation (INPEX) have strengthened their strategic partnership for the development of the Abadi LNG Project in the Masela Block through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The Abadi LNG Project in the Masela Block, Arafura Sea, Indonesia, is one of the largest gas projects in Indonesia and is expected to become a long-term energy supply source for the Asia region.

This strategic collaboration in developing the value chain of the Abadi LNG Project in the Arafura Sea is a continuation of the previous MoU signed by both companies in July 2023.

Pertamina’s President Director and CEO, Simon Aloysius Mantiri, stated that through this cooperation, Pertamina and INPEX are exploring various synergy opportunities in project development, ranging from upstream aspects to the potential utilization of gas and LNG across various energy sectors.

“Through the extension of this MoU, Pertamina hopes that this LNG project can be realized and become Pertamina’s real contribution to the nation,” he explained.

The signing was carried out by PT Pertamina (Persero)’s President Director and CEO, Simon Aloysius Mantiri, and Takayuki Ueda, President & CEO of INPEX Corporation, in Tokyo on Monday, March 30, 2026.

At the same time, PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), as Pertamina’s Upstream Subholding, also signed an MoU with INPEX for the potential development of upstream oil and gas business in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.

“Pertamina continues to seek energy supply sources to meet domestic energy needs. Through Pertamina Group’s integrated business from upstream to downstream, strategic partnerships with various parties will strengthen Pertamina’s steps in achieving energy security targets,” Simon explained.

The Abadi LNG Project is currently operated by INPEX through its subsidiary, INPEX Masela Ltd., with a planned production capacity of 9.5 million tons of LNG per year. The project will also integrate carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology to support the development of lower-emission energy.

INPEX has been participating in upstream oil and gas activities in Indonesia since the 1960s and currently serves as the operator of the Abadi LNG Project in the Masela Block.

Through this strategic collaboration, Pertamina and INPEX will explore cooperation in various upstream and downstream aspects of the Abadi LNG Project, including potential collaboration in offtake and product transportation, marine transportation and marine activities, as well as cooperation in carbon credit trading and carbon offset.

As a leading company in the energy transition, Pertamina is committed to supporting Indonesia’s Net Zero Emission 2060 target and continues to drive programs that have a direct impact on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All of these efforts are in line with Pertamina’s transformation, which is oriented toward good governance, public service, business and environmental sustainability, by applying Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) principles across all lines of Pertamina’s business and operations, in coordination with Danantara Indonesia.
