Renewable Energy Innovation by ITS Students Reaches Global Competition in the US

San Diego – TERANGIN, a startup from the Pertamuda Seed & Scale 2025 program, has achieved a brilliant accomplishment. TERANGIN made it into the Top 6 and secured 4th place in the Fowler Global Social Innovation Challenge (Fowler GSIC) 2026.

The prestigious event was held at the University of San Diego, United States, on May 1 and 2, 2026. Representing Indonesia, TERANGIN from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) successfully outperformed 43 finalists from 10 countries.

TERANGIN presented a sustainable solution in the form of a renewable energy-based plant pest trap that combines wind turbines and solar panels. This innovation not only provides a solution for farmers but is also in line with the global energy transition agenda.

Pertamina Vice President of Corporate Communication, Muhammad Baron, stated that this achievement is clear proof of Pertamina’s role in nurturing young innovators and building a globally competitive startup ecosystem.

“TERANGIN’s success in San Diego validates that Indonesian innovations meet world-class standards. Through Pertamuda, we provide continuous mentoring so that students’ creative ideas can transform into real solutions recognized by international investors,” said Baron.

Muhammad Hanif, founder of TERANGIN, expressed his appreciation for the full support provided by Pertamina, especially during the preparation and trip to the United States.

“The Fowler GSIC competition gave us a new perspective on the international industry scale. We are grateful to the Pertamina and Pertamuda teams who fully facilitated us, from intensive mentoring to funding for this event,” said Hanif.

In addition to TERANGIN, the Indonesian delegation was also represented by Pe-NOVTRA from Politeknik Elektronika Negeri Surabaya (PENS). PENS brought an innovation in the form of a self-charging (piezoelectric) oil palm harvesting tool.

For finishing in 4th place, TERANGIN received funding of USD 3,000 for further business development. This participation further strengthens Indonesia’s position on the global social entrepreneurship map and opens opportunities for collaboration with international partners.

Pertamuda Seed & Scale is Pertamina’s program aimed at recruiting and nurturing young entrepreneurs at the university level. Now entering its fifth year, the program has involved more than 14,000 students from hundreds of universities across Indonesia.
