Kepri Quarantine Rejects Imported Vegetables from China

Batam: The Riau Islands Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine Center, through the Batu Ampar Service Post in Batam City, rejected 8.8 tons of salted vegetables imported from China on Sunday evening, June 22, 2025. The rejection was made after discrepancies were found in the product's health certificate.

Riau Islands (Kepri) Quarantine Office Head Herwintarti explained that the health certificate submitted from China was incomplete and incorrect. “After verifying the documents, quarantine officials found that the health certificate from the origin country was inconsistent,” she stated in Batam on Monday, June 23.

The salted vegetables, packed in a single container were then detained by quarantine authorities. According to Article 333 of the Quarantine Office Regulation No. 14/2024, the goods’ owner was given three working days to complete the required documentation.

If the documents are not completed within three days, the product will be rejected and removed from the Indonesian territory. “The rejection is to prevent the quarantine plant pests (OPTK) from spreading and protect human health and natural resources,” Herwintarti explained.

This action complies with Law No.21/2019 on Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine. Firm enforcement is taken to maintain food security and safety in the Riau Islands region, a border area.

Herwintarti emphasized that this step aligns with the instructions of the Indonesian Quarantine Agency Head, Sahat M. Panggabean. “The Indonesian Quarantine Agency supports President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka's Astacita program in achieving food self-sufficiency,” Herwintarti said.

The program aims to ensure that all transported media are safe, healthy, and suitable for consumption. “We are committed to maintaining the quality of imported products to prevent harm to consumers and the environment,” she added.

This rejection is part of the Riau Islands Quarantine Agency’s strict oversight of imported products. These efforts are crucial to protect the local market and prevent the spread of pests and diseases that could damage the ecosystem. (red)
